One of my fav things about my new post-doc gig is that it is on a college campus with a sweet new rec center. I pay for membership there (on accounta being "staff" now), but it's not too exorbitant.
I've been on a weight-lifting training program since January, and it is AWESOME. I have been trying to shed some 40 (eep!) pounds that crept up during the last 14-18 months of my dissertation (*shakes fist at the universe for this*) and it has been slow going. But!! I have muscles!! I can finally see them in the mirror. I am so pleased about this. They've been there for a while, but there's still a rather thick layer of padding covering them up. That is still there, but it is less dense. I still look a little soft on the outside, but the muscles underneath? They are stone!! Yeah.
I am pretty excited about my clothes fitting a bit looser (in large part because I don't have the spare cash to replace my wardrobe). Though I might have to buy some new t-shirts anyway, given that the sleeves are getting a little snug around my bulging biceps - I am so not even kidding.
I like this one. It might even mitigate my officemate's alarm over my not-enough-pink wardrobe and "manly" fitness pursuits. Heh. (I kid, the officemate seems to have grokked the inappropriateness of her critique, and has mostly shut up about it.)

OMG that t-shirt is amazing!! Please get it.
And way to go on the working out! From what I've heard, mixing weights with a little cardio makes each more effective than if you were only doing either one. I go to a killer spin class once a week that makes me want to cry, but I feel like I lose about 2 lbs' worth of sweat each time, so...totally worth it!
Way to go!! Noticing those changes is such an awesome feeling.
Dr. Becca - I used to run marathons (which was great - I could eat like friggin' rhino and not pack on the pounds) but I kinda burned out on it. It's hard to have a life when you're training like that. This training plan that I'm doing is only just now adding exclusively cardio intervals, for which I am glad. The lifting sets were enough of an interval workout to begin with, and I'm finally feeling like my fitness level is back up to the point that I can managed to mix in some endurance. So yay for that.
famusings - Thanks!
Love the shirt, and many others on the website. And congrats on your muscles!
w00t! Nice work!
That's awesome, AA! I worked with a personal trainer once and was amazed at the muscle tone and results. Too bad I am unable to motivate myself to that extent. Sounds like you're doing awesome though, and that shirt kicks ass!
yey! that is so fun! It's such a great feeling being able to see the weights getting heavier and hevavier with time, at least I get a kick out of it :)
And the t-shirt is cute. I managed to step away from the store without buying the one I really really want to have - I've promised myself no more t-shirts until I clear some old ones out amd figured out my new size in them.
(the SHS Sunnydale high was just too cute.... not to mention "Wolfram and hart, atterneys at law" yummm :D)
That is a great shirt. Also, good job on keeping up with working out. Very impressive!
If you are a fan of fun T-shirts, check out threadless.com. They have a wicked cool selection and I have almost half a drawer full of their shirts.
yay for results!
A word of caution: I have found tenure track to be a VERY fattening endeavor! All the stress, all the sitting... It's not pretty. I was joking that I gained 1 lb per proposal (I wrote A LOT of proposals)... Sigh.
Good for you. I too am on the path to physical fitness. Too bad our post-doc institutes are so far away 'cause I could really use a work out buddy. It sounds like you are doing great so far. Go you!
